Marching to a Storytelling Beat

Many associate the month of March with St. Patrick’s Day, but beyond four leaf clovers and charming green leprechauns, this month has so much more to offer. March is Women’s History Month and March 8th was officially International Women’s Day honoring the achievements of women (past and present) and across all nations. A quick perusal through the Grupology book collection brought to mind the riveting life stories and accomplishments of women such as Malala, Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, and Frida Kahlo.

Speaking of riveting life stories, March 20th is World Storytelling Day. We all have a story—probably many stories—whether they are funny, serious, scary, sad, or inspiring, these are the tales that shape our lives. March 20th also falls around the time of the Spring equinox. With buds blooming and bees buzzing, there’s a lot going on!

In the spirit of honoring the tradition of storytelling, we are captivated by NPR’s StoryCorps project. This project has given over a quarter of a million people the opportunity to record stories from their lives and to pass on wisdom from one generation to the next. Like a time capsule, this project leaves a legacy for future generations to draw from. “It is the largest single collection of human voices ever gathered.” StoryCorps began in 2003 in New York. A public recording booth was set-up in Grand Central Station inviting anyone and everyone to step inside and record a story. The topics covered vary widely and most of the stories are told in interview style with a partner, a relative, a friend, a classmate, a colleague, or even with a small group. Storytellers range in age from six to 100. We encourage your family to listen to some StoryCorps interviews and, even better, to contribute a story of your own.
